The UFC is considering adding a 125-pound female weight class later this year and would kick-start its new division with "The Ultimate Fighter" reality series.
The promotion sent a news release announcing that the upcoming 26th season of TUF will feature female flyweights for the first time, with an inaugural champion crowned at the end of the series.
However, UFC president Dana White told Yahoo! Sports that the news release had been sent in error and that the weight class has not been finalized.
The UFC also started with TUF when it added its 115-pound strawweight division in 2014.
The move would give the UFC four female weight classes: 115, 125, 135 and 145 pounds.
It's welcome news for the sport in general, as many female athletes in the UFC have been forced to choose between fighting as an undersized 135-pound bantamweight or a shrunken 115-pound strawweight. These fighters who are already signed to the UFC would be allowed to try out for TUF.
The 125-pound division would be the second female weight class added to the UFC in 2017. The promotion crowned Germaine de Randamie its first female featherweight champion in February, following her decision victory over former bantamweight champion Holly Holm.
Bellator MMA also intends to crown its first female flyweight champion later this year.
